Land Use Planning Program : An Overview
Planning the Future of the Eastern Shore

ESLC has preserved more than 39,000 Eastern Shore acres since 1990. Despite the clear success of our land protection programs, we are in a constant struggle against irresponsible development.

To help the Eastern Shore address this challenge, ESLC has developed the Regional Landscape Initiative, a program that focuses on one of the greatest landscape protection tools available: strong, proactive planning and zoning.

ESLC's Regional Landscape Initiative provides tools to curb sprawl and protect the Eastern Shore quality of life.

The three parts of the Regional Landscape Initiative together help increase the vibrancy of our towns while safeguarding our working landscapes and natural environment. Our tools include:

Developing a Blueprint for the Future:
The planning decisions made today are critical, for they define the Eastern Shore of tomorrow. Understanding this, ESLC is helping develop a shared Regional Vision for future land use on the Eastern Shore-a blueprint containing long-term regional land use goals that will help our leaders make the best decisions for the Eastern Shore.

Supplying Tools and Choices:
ESLC serves as a Regional Planning Forum-a regional resource to offer information, inspiration, and choices about growth and land use. Through this forum, ESLC provides:

  • Education and training opportunities for local planners and public officials;
  • Land use education that gives the public voice in local planning issues; and
  • Research to support better planning for communities and neighborhoods.

Investing in our Landscape:
ESLC fosters crucially needed federal, state, and local funding for better planning and preservation on the Eastern Shore. In particular, ESLC searches for funding that saves our productive farms and fisheries, enhances our close-knit small towns and communities, and protects the quality of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy's vision for 2050 is an Eastern Shore where towns are vibrant and well defined; farms, forests, and fisheries are thriving; and scenic historic, natural, and riverine landscapes are maintained.
