Building a Regional Vision:

The Future of Transportation on the Eastern Shore

A look into how we move about the region….

Transportation has been the force that has shaped--for better and for worse--the community, economy, and landscape of this region. Lack of it kept the Shore rural while surrounding seaboard swelled with development; Bay bridges and reach-the-beach policies then opened up the Shore to a new, often overwhelming world of development opportunity and challenge.

Today, transportation is at another crossroads. Long-held models of transportation and land planning policies--built on abundant fossil fuels, post-WWII ideals, and a now much-changed set of population demographics--are losing their relevance.

What can we do?

Available is a window of opportunity for the Shore to take the reigns on the powerful force of transportation policy--harnessing it to be an ally in sustaining the Eastern Shore landscape and way of life.

To better understand how the region can effectively shape and influence transportation decisions, ESLC has launched a probe into transportation issues and planning on the Eastern Shore.

Starting with coalescing a network of transportation leaders/practitioners, this effort focuses on gathering research, perspectives, and ideas on two topics: Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Rt. 50 demand management to make the most out of existing infrastructure, and multi-modal and user friendly regional transportation planning for what comes next.

What has been done so far?

  • GATHERING EXPERTS: An advisory council has been created that represents Eastern Shore leaders, county elected officials/staff and transportation practitioners and visionaries to help guide, provide knowledge, and build a network for this look into regional transportation.

  • DOCUMENTING PUBLIC PERSPECTIVE: Based on the topics above, a 6-county opinion poll has been conducted to gain an understanding the public’s perspective/priorities of transportation issues.

  • DIALOGUE: To start the dialogue, ESLC held on November 7, 2008 at Chesapeake College, a transportation conference entitled Where are the Eastern Shore’s Road Taking Us. This coalescing of 150 leaders from the region and across the country, sparked collaborative exchange, problem solving and discovery about one of the most powerful forces on our Eastern Shore landscape and community: regional transportation planning.

Coming Soon…

ESLC is working with the Advisory Committee and a Transportation Expert, Stu Sirota, in developing a set of research briefs focusing on current efforts, needs, opportunities, and recommended next steps related to Bay Bridge demand management and regional transportation planning.
