The call of the Northern Bobwhite Quail is a nostalgic sound to many on the Eastern Shore – but why have their songs been silent? Join Daniel Small from Washington College’s Center for Environment and Society (CES) for a birding tour of Conquest Preserve, where the CES’s Natural Lands Project (NLP) has implemented grassland restoration for declining bird species, like quail. Learn what it takes to support a covey, conservation needs for the Bobwhite, and grassland specifics that ensure their best success – and how CES has taken success from their experimental grasslands at Washington College’s River and Field Campus (RAFC; formerly known as Chino Farms) out into the community through NLP. And if we are really lucky, the local population of quail might make an appearance during the visit!

The May 9th event is the third installment of the 2nd Annual Bird Conservation Series. Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and Lower Shore Land Trust are collaborating in 2023 to deliver a series of 6 events highlighting efforts that support bird conservation on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

These events will discuss the organizations, programs, resources, research, and efforts that exist on the Eastern Shore that support the conservation of our resident and migratory bird species.

This is the last of ESLC’s bird conservation events, but in the fall, Lower Shore Land Trust will continue the tour through a bird sit overlooking Merry Marsh on Sinepuxent Bay, birding on Deal Island, and duck banding. Please join us as we tour the shore through the lens of bird conservation!
