Walktober 2021

Maryland will soon kick off it’s second annual Walktober, a month-long event hosted by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) with events and webinars that spotlight Maryland pedestrians’ safety, health, and commuting options in current walk programs and initiatives.

Although this is only the second celebration of Walktober, this year will mark the seventh annual celebration of Walk Maryland Day, a celebration of Maryland’s official state exercise and a “call to action to promote walking for physical activity and improved health.” As part of Walk Maryland Day, volunteer Walk Leaders throughout the state will lead registered walks with participants (AKA “Sole Mates”).

Additionally, MDOT (along with a number of state agencies and local partners) will be hosting a series of “Walkinars” – that is, 90-minute webinars that will inform Marylanders how to help lift up walking as both a form of exercise and transportation. Visit MDOT’s website to learn more about Walktober and to sign up for a Walkinar!
